Meet The
Instructor
下中 神司 Shimonaka Koji
Born in Japan and raised overseas, I grew up surrounded by different cultures and approaches to dance.
Through over 16 years of teaching, learning from and working with dancers from around the world, I would love to share a unique international perspective to ballroom dancing.
My lessons strive to combine professionalism, warmth, and clear bilingual guidance, in both English and Japanese, helping students discover not only how to dance—but also the joy, confidence, and connection that dancing can bring.

Why I started Dancing.
My early life has been spent traveling from place to place. When I was 18, I moved to Colombia for studies and to look for adventure before my adult life began.
There I attended a school 3 day long seminar at a big ranch with other students. In the evenings, there was, of course, dancing!
I had never danced before and was terrified of joining. I also being the only Japanese in this event, felt I would stick out in a bad way.
I quickly asked one of my friends there (his name was Sebastian) there to teach me some simple steps. He said “sure — easy! Just do this” he asked one of the girls nearby and danced with her some amazing steps which looked like pure magic. The girl had a big smile the whole time and looked like she was having so much fun!
As a young man, to be able to lead your partner to music without a pre-set choreography was something that didn’t make sense to me but made me I wanted to learn more! I will never forget that feeling it made me feel.
After returning to Japan, a childhood friend of mine contacted me about a job opening in a ballroom dance studio which they would teach me to be an instructor and provide support along the way. It sounded like a dream come true!
Little did I know that when I walked into that job interview that I would be still teaching and dancing more than 15 years later and loving it!

What I love about Dancing and teaching.
Giving is something that has always made me happy. After going on a trip, bringing back family and friends souvenirs is one of my biggest joys.
I feel that teaching dancing and giving students the best experience and seeing them continue to transform is what makes me look forward to everyday.
Through dance, I experienced the process of seeing students discover sides of themselves they never thought they had or have been wanting to express.
I have seen people transform through music and dancing to become not only healthier, but also genuinely happier and more beautiful as a result.
I hope everyone will have the opportunity to try dancing at least once in their life and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say the world would be a much happier place for it.
